The definitive collection. Celebrating 40 years since the Swedish band’s inception, this box set is a digitally remastered wonder of, you guessed it, 40 singles.
For lifelong fans, it’s a dream come true; for those new to ABBA, there’s no reason to go any further than this set to discover the pop gems you’ve heard about. Yes, 40 years ago ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest with their hit, “Waterloo” and quickly became pretty successful—if by “pretty successful” you mean selling 380 million albums and singles, thereby making them one of the best-selling music groups of all time. From 1972 until their breakup in 1982, Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad were the kings and queens of Europop and disco. Then, they virtually disappeared from the cultural landscape. In fact, they were made fun of, mocked, thrown in the discount rack like another can of beans. ABBA’s era seemed to be over.
But, ABBA returned with a vengeance. The movies “Muriel’s Wedding” and “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” put their music back on the airwaves, and the ABBA-featured musical Mamma Mia was a smashing success and still tours internationally. The movie version—starring Meryl Streep—was the highest grossing film in the U.K. ABBA was then inducted into the in 2010.

This giant box set takes that celebration a step further with a 3-CD collectionfeaturing the 40 top hits from the ’70s and ’80s wonderland like “Mamma Mia,” “Take a Chance on Me” and “The Winner Takes It All,” as well as a bunch of B-sides and obscure international rarities to appease the diehards. Check out the German version of “Ring Ring,” a Spanish version of “I Have a Dream,” and a French version of “Waterloo.” Of course, this trove of ABBA music isn’t for everyone. But one doesn’t just buy a box set of ABBA without knowing what they’re getting into. Truthfully, 40 disco songs is a lot to sit through. The ‘70s haven’t had a resurgence as of late quite like the ‘80s have, but perhaps it’s not far off. In the meantime, this set is not for one sitting. The entire set—that includes exact replicas of the sleeves and labels of each single—is a testament, perfectly produced to mimic ABBA’s stature in the music world.

It doesn’t necessarily improve upon what the band once had to offer, but simply states—emphatically—this is what ABBA did, and it was good enough for them to become one of the biggest bands the world has ever seen. At the very least, it’s a box set that’ll have you singing “Dancing Queen” again at the karaoke bar. I am a longtime Abba fan and I have all of their albums.
Abba wasn’t just a Disco band. I think you are selling them short by calling them that. They also had Pop and Rock songs. Some of the songs they did in 1974 and 1975 like Hey, Hey Helen, Rock Me and So Long even sound like Glam Rock, which was very popular at that time in Britain and Europe, and those songs can be seen as a reflection of that. Abba may be known as a Disco band in America since Dancing Queen is probably their most famous hit here, but they were a lot more versatile than that.

Looking over the track listings for this box set it does look as if disc 1 does have a lot of the Disco songs (don’t get me wrong, I love their Disco songs, I just don’t think they should be known only as a Disco band), but it looks as if disc 2 of the set mixes it up and features more of the Pop and Rock songs they did, and disc 3 is a bunch of their b-sides and not all of those songs are Disco either, especially since some of the singles they are on came out before the Disco era. I also believe that disc 1 and disc 2 have been released separately before as Abba Gold and More Abba Gold, and those CDs have been out since the early ’90s, so the only thing that is new to this set seems to be disc 3. The CD versions of Abba’s albums do have some of these b-sides as extra tracks so I am not really sure how many of these b-sides are previously unreleased on CD, but this does seem to be the first time they are together on one disc, or at least that I have seen.

So the only thing of interest to older Abba fans in this set if they already have the Abba Gold CDs would be the disc of b-sides. I do realize that Abba is not for everyone, and maybe you didn’t have a chance to listen to all of the songs in this box set before writing this review, but I did think it was important to mention that it’s not all Disco, and that Abba crafted some of the most infectious Pop songs ever written. I think the 1 disc version of Abba Gold is a good introduction to their music for new fans, and as far as their albums go, I would recommend the Arrival to new fans since it is a good mix of Pop and Disco, and for those who want to hear more of Abba’s Rock side, check out their self-titled album from 1975.
